An interview with Sonia Douar
What made you want to become a beauty queen at an early age ?
I have always been fascinated by the world of fashion. Whether on television or in magazines, I looked at famous top models on the cat walk and I wanted to look like them. Their lives seem to come out of a fairy tale. I admired their charisma, their presence and most of all their self-confidence in all circumstances.
How were you spotted ?
It was the manager of a French agency of models thatspotted me when I was only 17. She was immediately mesmerized by my crystalline blue eyes. From that moment, my career was launched. Then, I worked for a British agency which made me participate in beauty contests, There, I worked on photoshoots and learned the basics of this job. From then until now, my passion for it has grown over time.
According to you, what was the event that definitively launched your career ?
It was undoubtedly when I represented France at the beauty contest ‘Face of the Globe’ In 2016.The final was held in London and I finished in the top 10. This competition gave me a strong public identity & recognition. I now had the responsibility & opportunity to really make a difference& touch people’s lives. My first project there was with a foundation called ‘ The Rainbow Child’. They work with specially abled children all over the world. I played a pivotal role in raising funds for the foundation and the beauty pageant title created the necessary impact. I truly believe that, to be a beauty queen must not be an end in itself, but it must serve noble causes.
Is 2016 a particularly significant year for you ?
Yes, because in 2016, I represented the ‘Principality of Monaco’ for the 45th anniversary of the International beauty contest,‘Miss Intercontinental 2016’ in Sri Lanka’. I was ranked in the top 20 and in the top 5 in the Best Body category. This event gave me access to world class beauty contests. Among other things, I was mediated by major television channels, such as, Channel One and Fox. This journey will remain forever etched in my memory because I was able to fully live my dream and experience the splendour of beauty contests: palaces, notoriety but without forgetting to respond to all the professional requests that were planned in my agenda. To be a ‘Miss’ is to forget the idea of being on holiday.
What other countries have particularly impressed you in your professional activity ?
In Cambodia, in 2017, I represented the‘Principality of Monaco’ for their 5th anniversary of the international beauty contest ‘Miss Global 2017. I tasted the impeccable hospitality of the local people&their unfailing kindness. Again, I wished to highlight my humanitarian commitments by visiting schools, providing as much help and support as I could. I come from a modest family and have worked hard to get to where I am today. It is important for me to give back in my own way, what has been given to me by my work. But it is my role as a beauty VIP ambassador in Abidjan in Ivory Coast on behalf. of a company which particularly impressed me. While doing promotional activities, participating in official receptions, I could discover a country whose culture and humanity of population enchanted me.
One can feel in you a real fibre for humanitarian issues…
Yes, I am very sensitive to the fate of those whose life is full of heavy trails, like diseases or every form of inequality. As a Beauty Miss’ , I feel it is my duty to bring my help to those who need it. My plans must be used to raise funds for different causes, like visiting orphanages and bring some comfort to those who really need it. I am in conversation with a TV show that is keen for me to become their ‘Humanitarian Ambassador’. Let’s hope it works out as that again will give me an edge above to make a difference.
Are your activities reduced to the job of model and miss ?
No, I have more strings to my bow. It is in Canada in 2018 that I wanted to explore a new aspect of my work, to become an influencer on behalf of a model agency and also to promote an application for mobile phones. Then came another artistic revelation about which I would have never thought before : I had a small part in a wed series entitled the ‘Daily Morin’, which traces enigmas inspired from the heritage of The Vallée du Morin. I loved playing comedy. ‘Miss You’ was a strong character. I would be pleased to explore more acting projects as I really enjoyed this one.
Interview by Countess Elena de Bachhi
Do you have any other projects in the future or others in which you would like to take part ?
I was recently elected Top Model Monaco 2019 for « Top Model of the World 2019 ». Very quickly, I would like to do beauty contests notably as miss intercontinental. Besides, I would like to participate in advertising campaigns for major brands, to be a top model in fashion’s magazines. But above all, I would like to combine my job as a miss and the one as an ambassador in the name of great humanitarian causes.
Is there anyone who has been particularly important for you and whose careerinspires you every day?
Without a doubt, it is Countess Elena de Bacci who is a female role model for me. Her beauty is equaled only by her extreme good heart. She has always been by my side, even in difficult moments. She is a loyal woman, faithful and who gives me precious counseling to help me surpass me a little every day, I owe her a lot.
